US soldiers at lonely Tanf base practiced shooting down drones with new system

By SETH J. FRANTZMAN

Photos from the Special Operations Joint Task Force of OIR show a “soldier lands a drone that carried a box used as a target during a Smart Shooter sighting device familiarization range near At-Tanf Garrison, Syria, May 30, 2020.” The caption goes on to note that “Coalition and partner forces regularly train on various weapon systems in a joint effort to help set conditions for the enduring defeat of Daesh in Syria.”

This system helps a soldier by using the Smart Shooter sighting device technology to enable a pinpoint shot at the right time at a moving small target, like a drone. In another case a photo shows the soldiers “fire at a target box carried by a drone during a familiarization range near At-Tanf Garrison, Syria, May 30, 2020.”
